COURSE CURRICULUM OVERVIEW

Introduction

This program is designed to equip you with essential knowledge and skills to expertly guide expecting and postpartum clients through these significant life phases. Together, we will explore the physiological and biomechanical changes related to pregnancy and childbirth, while understanding the specific needs of this population.

The evidence-based course covers safe Pilates exercises, with appropriate modifications and progressions for each trimester and postpartum recovery. By the end, you’ll be able to create personalized programs that empower women during this transformative journey, ensuring their well-being and progress.

Pelvic Floor

This module is designed to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the female pelvic floor, including its anatomy, physiology, and essential functions. Participants will learn about the organs and muscles that support the pelvic region while mastering the nuances of pelvic floor contraction to effectively cue strength and relaxation.

The course will also teach how to identify signs of pelvic floor dysfunction, such as incontinence and prolapse, enabling timely interventions. Additionally, participants will gain the skills to design and adapt fitness programs for those with pelvic issues, along with knowing when to refer clients to specialists for further assessment.

Instructing Antenatal Clients

The “Instructing Antenatal Clients” module focuses on the latest research and guidelines regarding exercise during pregnancy, with a particular emphasis on Pilates practice.

By exploring the benefits and potential risks associated with various exercises, this module empowers both instructors and their pregnant clients to make informed choices for safe and effective workout routines.

Participants will gain essential knowledge and tools to guide clients through a fulfilling Pilates experience that prioritises their health and safety during pregnancy.

Learning objectives include understanding current exercise guidelines and their practical applications for developing Pilates programs tailored to expectant mothers.

Instructors will learn to recognize contraindications, properly interpret pregnancy screening forms, and comprehend physiological changes that occur during this unique time.

Additionally, participants will refine their skills in modifying exercises and maintaining session flow, ultimately fostering a supportive environment for pregnant clients to engage in safe workout practices throughout their pregnancy journey.

Instructing Post Natal Clients

Navigating the return to exercise after childbirth can be both a transformative and challenging experience for postpartum clients. With so much conflicting information about safe exercise practices and timelines for resuming activity, it’s easy for new mothers to feel overwhelmed.

As an instructor, it’s vital to recognize that each woman’s body, birth experience, and fitness goals are distinct. Tailoring Pilates programs to individual needs is crucial; understanding how different delivery methods—like vaginal birth, cesarean sections, or assisted deliveries—affect recovery will allow instructors to create effective and safe exercise plans.

By mastering concepts like birth factors and utilizing tools such as a Postnatal Exercise Screening Form, instructors can assess individual needs, address concerns like rectus diastasis, and develop appropriate, progressive Pilates classes that promote recovery and empowerment for postpartum clients.

Teaching Clients with Musculoskeletal Conditions

This module is designed to provide a thorough understanding of the anatomical and biomechanical changes in the spine and pelvic joints during pregnancy. It explores common musculoskeletal issues such as back pain, sciatica, pelvic girdle pain, and more. Participants will learn to create safe and effective exercise programs tailored for individuals experiencing these conditions.

The curriculum emphasizes which exercises should be avoided or modified, empowering participants to deliver personalized interventions. Ultimately, this training aims to boost participants’ confidence and effectiveness in teaching private or clinical classes, addressing the specific needs of pregnant and postpartum individuals dealing with pain.
